Preserving your Brass Plaque:

Brass may be a combination of zinc, copper and other kinds of metal. It needs occasional maintenance to keep it looking its best. This is a short and easy guide in cleaning an old brass plaque :

* Gently wash off the dust, grime, and oil from the plaque using mild soap, water, and a cloth. Simply dilute mild soap into war water and dip your rag into it before you wipe the plaque.

o You can also use toothpaste as it can work as a polisher as well. Aside from detergent, you can also use vinegar. Avoid scrubbing the brass plaque as this can damage the engraving and nick the surface.

* There is polish available in hardware stores that have been designed specifically for brass. Use a dry cloth to buff the surface with the polish.

* To seal in the buff and add shine, paint on some lacquer on the surface of the plaque. Use a paint brush and paint lightly. Wipe away dribbles before you leave it to dry.

* To remove tarnishes, you can use acetic acid or half a lemon with table salt. There are also tarnish removing creams available in many hardware stores.
