It is hard to imagine that if you could go back in time to just a few years ago, you could tell someone that the show could be an eight season super series. It is now with Discovery Channel\’s best TV series that it can be confirmed that the series has captured the minds of viewers in multiple countries. It has been nominated for numerous television awards and for good reason. Many will take one look at the show and on face value judge it to be just another reality television show. However it has so much more going for it than that, it connects to a lot of interesting themes and topics.

What is it exactly that has brought this franchise to Deadliest Catch 2012 and kept it plain sailing? It\’s the fact that it shows real lives and real drama, nothing is manufactured and set up to create more engaging shots. The events you see on the show are completely real and correlate with the actual working life of a deep sea crab fishing vessel. This is like a breath of fresh air for viewers, as they are often showered with false reality television painting a jaded picture of events and actions.

A majority of Discovery\’s most popular TV show\’s content is popular with all viewers for the simple reason that they can relate to it. Not in a practical sense that the families have been crab fishing or on the most dangerous waters on earth, but in the sense that many of the workers on the ships featured in the show are related. They have to cooperate through very serious situations in which everyone\’s safety is at risk. They have to put aside any altercations they have and work together. This is a great lesson for families to learn, and it is shown on the show almost every time.

Alaskan crab fishing show on Discovery Channel also reminds audiences of the vastness and complexity of how humans source their food. In any local supermarket you can be pretty much guaranteed that a lot of the food there has been transported in from around the globe. We live in a global economy and food is regularly transported around long and difficult supply chains just to get to us. This is something that is all too easily forgotten when we eat at home or in a restaurant.

Because of these thought provoking themes deadliest catch goes beyond the likes of other reality TV shows. You get to escape reality and be put in the shoes of another person living a very different life. In this way it is kind of like alternate-reality TV, as deep sea crab fishing is a world that is completely alien to most of us.

It is quite likely that nobody could have forecasted the amount of success that this show has had. It started out as a point of interest and has exploded into a multifaceted franchise. There are now books released about the show both in autobiography format and general informational books. There are video games released about the show where players have to operate and successfully run a crab fishing vessel.
