Lighting Categories
One important factor in the home decor is home lighting. You can create any type of environment using different lighting fixtures. But it is very important to know about different lighting categories and their functions so that you are able to choose the right lights for the right purpose and can thus make your home look unique and beautiful.
Ambient lights are the general purpose lights for lighting up the entire space. Ceiling lights and wall sconces are the best examples of ambient lights. These fixtures cover the wall area which in turn reflect the light and give a good look in the room.
Harmonious ambient lighting is dominant. It should give the background to your decor, but not be the focal point.
Task lighting are also known as functional lights as they are mainly used for areas where some specific tasks are performed like reading, writing, stitching, cooking etc. So every room where some of these activities are carried out must have task lights.
One important thing to remember in task lighting is their placement. They should be placed in such a way that one is able to perform his/her job comfortably without straining the eyes. So it is better to place them directly over the work place or slightly to the side of the area. These are mainly used in areas like over the dining table, at the desk etc. Also make sure that you link them to separate switches.
Another interesting lighting fixtures are the accent lights. These are used to highlight certain objects in the room, like a painting or any piece of art. This way you can draw special attention toward these and can enhance their beauty. But always plan out properly what objects to highlight.
Accent lights can be used in several different ways to change the look of a room. You can go for halogen spot lights to highlight the art work. One way to create a different look is to place the light under a plant kept inside the home. It will create shadows on the ceiling which will give a different look.
While accent lights emphasize a specific accent, decorative lights are themselves the attention drawing accents. They do not provide a lot of light; their sole purpose is to grab attention and ad to the dramatic scheme of your decor.
