It doesn\’t matter whether your passion is only occassional or regular, you already know the feeling of exhiliration you get by being with nature on the slopes or trails. At the end of your day of skiing you can sit back and warm yourself by the fire as you dine with friends or sip drinks while chatting the night away.

These areas are however not free from hazards and dangers, we simply accept that they are there and respect their space. It\’s part of enjoying the sport and we are all aware of it. Listen to your elders, these safety tips can help keepyou out of trouble.

The wrong kind of equipment is the leading cause of accidents in many areas of life. That also applies to any kind of sports or recreational activity including skiing. You should always use the proper ski equipment for the environment you\’ll be in as well as the kind of skiing you\’ll be doing. Borrowing equipment is not a great idea. It\’s up to you where to rent but you can rent from a pro shop near your destination. You may be able to rent from a location close to home and haul your equipment with you. Always ask for assistance, if you\’re inexperienced, with proper fitting for ski boots and your skis, as well. Although they are not mandatory it is a good idea to use a helmet. But there are no laws about wearing a helmet while skiing. However, obviously a helmet can save your life should you have a ski accident. We all know there are frequently trees and other natural hazards that can turn a fall into a deadly accident, or at least one that can cause serious injury. If you do elect to wear a helmet, then we highly recommend you choose one that is certified as tested and safe. Children should be mandatory helmet wearers.

Sure, we\’ve seen skiers who are quite rude toward others, and you do need to keep a special eye on their behavior, unfortunately. There is however a code of ethics for skiers too that has a goal of keeping everyone as safe as possible. When the mountain is crowded you can bet the narrow trails will be too which can pose a challenge. In times like these stay alert, give to the right of way, be courteous and above all else be alert at all time.
