Throughout the history of tattoos these markings have already been taboo in some religions, but are considered an acceptable practice in other beliefs. Some religions do not take a stand on the matter, but those which forbid tattoos as a form of expression or for any reason at all do so simply because of the biblical teachings of the religion. The bible, Jewish law, and Sharia law all especially have passages that talk about marking, defiling, or mutilating the body. Under Sharia law that Muslims follow all tattoos are forbidden simply because these markings change the body and are considered a permanent mutilation.

The Catholic religion does not forbid tattoos as long as the tattoo received doesn\’t contain anything that will be sacrilegious or regarded in opposition of the teachings of the Catholic cathedral. In hundreds of years past several Catholic soldiers for god received tattoos and this was regarded a good reason for praise because of the commitment to god that the tattoo signified.

The Jewish law has stayed the same through the historical past of tattoos. Nearly all Jewish rabbis prohibit tattoos based upon biblical lessons and Jewish legislation. These spiritual laws do make exceptions in some cases, such as when the person tattooed was forced to go through this treatment solution and the tattoo is used by someone else. There are a variety of spiritual passages that can be used to show that having tattoos is sinful but the precise concept of these verses can vary from one spiritual leader to the next. In centuries past many Christians wore tattoos with pride, but other times these markings could be considered a cause for shame.

The region of the world will also play a role in whether or not tattoos are considered acceptable. In India and certain other states tattoos have always been markings of elegance and spirituality within the religions practiced in the area.
