How we all long for a bit of time to just relax and take it easy! We all seem to work so hard, yet find such little time in our lives to just purely relax and unwind. Particularly when we need this so badly. Never the less, we all look for our bit of peace in different ways.

As a contemporary artist that loves nature, I often head for the country to admire the wonderful landscapes, mountains, trees, lakes, flowers, birds etc. The effect they have on me is calming. The rare beauty of these stirs my emotions. Often I capture these on camera, so that the memory remains with me.

Don’t you just love the colors of the seasons. Summer so bright and colorful in stark contrast to winter, with the naked trees, bareness, snow and ice, and not forgetting all our frosts.

The Autumn is fantastic. This surely is one of the best seasons for color. Swirling leaves in mixed colors blowing in all directions, golden yellows, browns and varying shades of reds. They seem to pelt along together with the falling twigs from the trees, conkers and ebbing leaves.

I have spent some time in County Kerry, where the scenes there are naturally rugged which is fascinating to the eye of a painter. If you head on towards Dingle the natural flow of the waterfalls at Muckross Pass takes your breath away. The early morning mists too, are something to behold.

Different things appeal to different people of course. We all like to observe things, whether it is your children running around, birds flying, kittens playing with wool etc. It could be many things, strolling along empty shores, or just watching the waves crash on the water.

One thing is for sure, one of the finest things to encapsulate is the early morning sunrise or the evening sunsets in all their glory. This is beauty at it’s finest. Spring too, is an interesting season, when you see the first buds appearing on trees, hedges and bushes. Snowdrops and delicate Celandines pushing their way up though the ground.

Easter brings little surprises, chicks and eggs. Moving on into May with a blaze of Bluebells peeping through our hedgerows, gardens and forests. Summer - something we have all been awaiting. Flowers and trees cheering us all on our way.

Flowers are in full bloom creating magical displays which lift our spirits. Hues and patches of delicate tones which warm the soul, to very bright and passionate colors which knock our socks off.

If you are still stuck for inspiration just look up at the clouds. All changing, moving lazily across the sky. Skies are fascinating with colors interchanging, period! Red skies herald a new day and we are in heaven.

Landscapes are so inspiring and never boring. That is why artist’s love doing them. You are never short of natures subjects, so come on, take your first steps and bite the bullet.

Sanguine can be a drawing, crayon or chalk. There are various different shades it can actually be. Flesh, or an absolute blood red, or a reddish colour. This medium can be used for drawing. It has oxide in the pigment and the content of it is generally chalk or clay. This is also the main colour in Conte crayons. Red chalk, as a term, is the name of the shade.

Sandy Paste works pretty well when using pastels, as it spreads well. The texture of it is gritty and is a sandy coloured acrylic paste which makes for an interesting surface.

Scale really is how you put in proportion the sizing of the dimensions of one thing against another. When drawing to scale, the scale would be the ratio of your drawing to the first drawing. So if you did your drawing to half scale, it would be half the size of your original.

Triptych - Basically this is a set of three paintings which all relate to each other. They can be connected together or hung side by side. Sometimes they are, in fact, hinged together. The central work being the main subject with the other paintings flanking either side of it. These can be mounted on a sort of platform affair and sometimes they are like carvings.

Diptych - A set of two pictures which often can be united in the centre, or if you prefer it, they can be hung with a gap between them. Polytych, on the same theme, only with four or five works of art.

Automatic Drawing, which can also be called automation. An interesting form of drawing, as with this you use your pencil or brush without really thinking about it. Probably first used by Surrealists who did not really conform to traditional methods as it allowed them more freedom of expression.

Many fantastic paintings were created like this, often leaning towards Abstract Expressionism.

Graphite - Years ago this was used for writing, by using small lumps of it, which were attached to a stick. It is a form of carbon, which is a grey or black. At one time it was called black lead and to this day some pencils are not properly labelled and are still being sold as lead pencils. The pencils themselves are a mixture of graphite and clay.

Conte crayons are a mixture of clay with graphite. These have variants which will produce differences in the degrees of hardness. These crayons date back to the 18th Century.

They are a bit like chalk, but slightly greasy, so they do not crumble as much. Available usually in a few colours, namely brown, black and a red. These are used for drawing. Conte invented the modern graphite pencils, but when he was young he was a portrait painter.

I find that suncatchers are a charming item and people always seem to admire them. They can be made in endless ways and with different items. Stained glass appears to be in great demand, but they are quite often made from plastic sheeting, which I am about to explain for novices. These items are so artistic yet often so very easy to make yourself and you will find that old and young people alike, really appreciate them!

You can hang them anywhere in the car, in your home, garden, your office etc. and they catch the light so beautifully. There are so many different ways you can actually make them, it is no wonder they are popular.

This one I am about to explain really is intended for a window, but of course the choice is up to you. So, now for your basic requirements. A roll of lead tape, glass paints and thinner, a tube of glass outliner, paintbrush, rubber suction hook, 2cm length of string and a pot for water. Plus, of course, an acrylic sheet in A5 size and a design for you to paint on your sheet.

It will probably give you more satisfaction if you go ahead and make your own design, but if this is not the case, go ahead and visit your local art supply shop. I am sure they must be able to sell you these.

The first step to take is to remove the film from the acrylic sheet. Continue then by cutting a length from your lead taping. The backing will need to be peeled off and then stuck along the edging of the acrylic sheet.

Of course we need something to hang this by, so we need a hook. For this you will require your string and a piece about 4cm long of your lead tape. You take the string and place this inside the tape, leaving it open at the end. Then you can go ahead and stick this to one of your edges on the sheet to make this hook to hang it from.

Next step, place your pattern sheet under the acrylic sheet and then you can draw your design with your tube of outliner from the pattern. Wait for this to dry.

The design has now been transferred to your sheet, so now you can start to use your glass paints to fill out your design. When you have finished this part I find it is better to give this plenty of time for drying. Therefore, if you leave it overnight, this is ideal. Your brush will need to be washed and given a good clean with the thinner if your glass paint contains solvent.

Some paints only have a water base, so these can just be washed in water. So, now we are getting near the end. You have to be able to hang the suncatcher, so this is where your suction hook comes in. Go ahead, stick this to your window and then attach your suncatcher. You will get great satisfaction when you see the light reflecting on and through it. If you have cracked it don’t stop there, try different designs and make a few more!

If you are going to do a job then the motto is “do it right” and this most certainly applies when it comes to stripping paint. Most professionals when stripping the paint from panels for example will depend on a chemical process to assist them. The chemical is specifically designed for stripping paint for the most part, though these are not cheap so learning to work with them properly can save you time and money. It?s still a time consuming project. You have to apply the stripper, leave it while it does its job, then come back and scrape of the stripper, then start the process all over again.

Here are some steps to help you get the job done fast and efficiently.

Step One: Get the surface ready. You do this by masking off the areas you don?t want stripped. Make sure you use a good quality masking tape, as you don?t want the stripper to seep under the tape. Also, be sure to mask well any openings or crevices that the stripper could get into. If this were to happen and go unnoticed then you could run into a problem later on. Stripper could easily surface up into the new paint you just recently applied.

Step Two: There are many good chemical strippers on the market today. Make sure you read and follow all of the manufacturer?s directions exactly. Don?t just assume that the one you are using now is going to be the same as the one you used last time. Some strippers are in liquid form while others are in a paste form. One common brand that is quite good is Aircraft Remover that is specifically made for auto body use. You need to pour some of the stripper from its original contain into a disposable container. Make sure you use a chemical resistant paintbrush to apply it with otherwise you could end up with a melted brush.

Step three: When you are applying the chemical, apply it in one direction only and don?t work too much with it. Working it too much only reduces its activity.

Step Four: This is an important step. Once you have your stripper on then cover it with polyethylene about 2-4ml thickness. Then secure this all around the edges. The reason for doing this is that the chemical components in the stripper that are responsible for softening up the paint evaporate quickly. Whereas if you cover it then it will work for a much longer period of time. You can leave it up to two hours for tough jobs. This little technique makes that expensive stripper go a little bit further. Another hint as well is with a 40-60 grade sandpaper just rough up the surface of the paint just enough to break through the paint film then apply the stripper.

Step Five: Remove the polyethylene, scrape, and then use steel wool to get into the crevices. Make sure all of the stripper residue is removed before proceeding. Some strippers you can rinse with water, but read the manufacturers directions according to the product you are using.
