This guide will seek to provide you with an explanation of the various concepts and terms which are used which respect to Canon EOS flash photography.

Flash and Strobe

What is the main difference between a Flash and strobe is just whether you are using UK or US English. We refer a strobe as a flash unit in the US whereas the British uses the word as meaning anything which emit blinking lights. Other commonly used terms which cause confusion in flash photography are the words “Speedlight” and “Speedlite”. Speedlight is actually the brand name of Nikon series of flash units while Speedlite is the brand name of Canon series of flash units.

Guide Number

This number refers to the maximum distance which a flash is range for. This number is irrelevant when you are using the automatic flash metering system. However the number is crucial if you are involved with manual flash settings.

EV (Exposure Value)

Exposure Value or EV is the rating used for determining the sensitivity of the Auto Focus (AF) system or exposure metering for a lens or film type. This number is just a combination of aperture and shutter speed. For example, f2 and 1/125 = EV 9 which is also equal to f4 and 1/30.

Dedicated and Non Dedicated Flash Units

Most Camera manufacturers also manufacture their own line of flash units to complement their camera models. These “own” brand of flash units are known as dedicated flash units. The Canon line of flash units is known as the Speedlite series. They are able to work together with the camera proprietary system to give more precision photography. Non dedicated Flash units are those flash units which are manufactured by third party manufacturers. Usually generic in nature, they cannot communicate with the camera proprietary system.

Shoe Mount

The rectangular slide-in socket which is usually located on top of the mirror or prism housing is known as the shoe mount. This mount is usually used for affixing the external flash unit to the camera. Sometimes it is called a Hot Shoe Mount as it has an electrical trigger to initiate the flash unit once the external flash is fixed to the camera. The Canon EOS Cameras have 4 additional contact points in the shoe mount which helps to transmit flash data from the trigger.

The Redeye Effect

A common occurrence with flash photography is the “Red Eye Effect”. This happens when the light from the flash unit is reflected back into the camera from it bounces of the red blood vessels of the eyes. The situation tends to occur in environment with low ambient lighting causing the pupils of the eyes to dilate bigger to allow for more light to enter the eyes.

Redeye Reduction

To reduce the problem of Red Eye, one can use several methods. The most effective way is to distance the flash away from the lens or bounce the flash light onto the subject as opposed to flashing directly at the subject. The other way is for the subject to observe a bright light source just before taking the subject picture. This will make the pupils smaller and thus lessening the reflective capability of the retina.

Do you want to take a tour of Mississippi that includes the scary things to do there such as the “Candlelight Ghost »”>Ghost Tour” during Halloween week in Vicksburg or the Ghosts and Legends tour in Columbus? If ghosts aren’t your thing how about going to Noxubee and seeing the restored 1907 jail with it’s operative gallows? If you want beauty rather than ghosts and scary things then maybe you should visit the Magnolia mansion which was built in 1850 with the antebellum architecture features showcasing the exquisite mahogany staircase and the stunning furnishings of the time. You can visit the mansion in Aberdeen.

So what is in Pickensville? The Tom Bevill Visitors Center and Museum. Here you can see exhibits on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The replica of an antebellum plantation mansion serves as the museum and visitor center.

Stopping on Columbus on a Saturday night from March through September will allow you to visit the Columbus Speedway. This 3/10 mile, oval clay track with the high banks will give you lots of thrills as the cars race around. There is nothing quite like the noise, dirt and of course the greasy food at a track to make your vacation just a bit more special.

Many areas celebrate Black History Month, but in Columbus there is a driving tour that will give you a tour of the African-American Heritage sites. You can participate in the Friday night celebration of music, food and fun at Catfish Alley. The driving tours are at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. during this annual event. The tours are free on Saturday for anyone wishing to go.

Magnolia is a small community that you will want to make sure you visit while on your Mississippi tourism vacation. This small town is home to three of Mississippi’s premier Queen Anne residences and an antebellum Greek Revival cottage as part of the Southtown Historic District. The Myrtle Street District is a typical neighborhood from the turn of the century and will transport you back in time by just looking at the simplicity of this area. Both of these districts are on the National Historic Register.

The town of Magnolia can be reached by Interstate 55, north or south, at exit 10, from the east on Highway 48 from Hattiesburg, Ms., and from the west on Highway 24 from Liberty, Ms.

Before deciding to use Non canon non dedicated flashes with Canon EOS cameras, you will need to be aware of its trigger voltage. Canon Speedlites flashes uses no more than 6 volts in their trigger circuits. As such you have to ensure that the non canon Flashes should also comply within this tolerance. The Canon EOS cameras like the EOS-1,A2/A2E,10s,630,Elan,RT and Rebel are all designed to operate with no more than 6 volts passing through their trigger circuits.

Those triggers which use more than 6 volts can damage the electrical circuitry of the camera. The connecting wires, the X-Sync contact point and the shutters are most prone to damages. The damage might not be obvious but will happen gradually over time. Beside from the likelihood of circuitry damages, electro magnetic noises generated by the high voltages will cause interference with the Camera operation. The metering system, aperture settings and shutter speed are just some of the possible effects of electro-magnetic noise on the circuit of the camera. Which function will be affected will depend ultimately on the circuits which is interfered with by the electromagnetic noise.

Testing the voltages of the flash triggering circuit is a simple task. Just use a voltmeter which is available at any Radio Shack stores. Connect the positive lead to the positive point of Sync Cord. The Negative lead should be connected to the ground of the Sync cord. With shoe mounted flash, just connect the positive lead to the center point of the mount. The negative lead has to be connected to the grounding point of the camera located at the side of the lock nut. Voltmeters have different setting which you can use. If you are unaware of the voltage of the Flash unit, just use the highest setting on the voltmeter than work your way downwards.

To fire a Studio flash safely without a sync cord, use a Speedlite 420EZ or 430EZ with 1/32 power under manual flash mode. Ensure that the flash’s optical slave trigger is activated before firing. You are actually using the bounce feature of the Speedlite 420EZ or 430EZ to direct the light to optical slave trigger. Alternatively, you can use radio slave triggers to fire the studio flash. Companies like Lindahl and Quantum Instruments sell radio transmitters that connect to the PC contact of the camera and a receiver to connect to studio flash power pack.

If the Studio Flash is not firing through the EOS Camera, you should check the following listed below:

(1) That the third party PC socket adapter do not have a metal shoes. This will result in a short circuit in the trigger circuit. The remedy is use Canon PC socket adapter which is made from plastic.

2. Make sure that the flash units polarities are in the correct order with the X-Sync of the camera contact point. The reversed polarities are normally caused by a diode which is coupled to the camera’s X-Sync contact for the protection of the camera internal flash. To correct this problem, simply reverse the polarity of the Sync Cord.

3. If after having tired these two suggested solution and the Flash still wont fire, then just adopt the method described above to fire the Flash without the use of the Sync cord.

Brighten Up Your Meals With Table Centerpieces!

When you sit down to eat, how often do you include table centerpieces? Not often? Well, these decorations can be simple, inexpensive and available on a moment’s notice! Using table centerpieces for every day use, you can brighten your table considerably, making even a casual family supper a little bit special. How can you have a choice of ready table centerpieces? Here are a few ideas to get you started.

When you think of centerpieces for the table, you may think of a large vase with freshly-cut flowers. With the price of flowers, unless you’ve got your own cutting garden, this just isn’t practical. Don’t let that deter you. Table centerpieces are meant to serve as a unifying focal point for the entire table setting, and need not be limited to a single vase.

Other great table centerpieces are–candlesticks, decorative tins or boxes, tiny vases, votive candles, luminaria and baskets. In fact, any of these can complement a large vase to suit a particular theme.

When creating your table centerpieces, consider the size of your gathering. For a dinner for two, a taller vase of roses set towards the end of the table is quite romantic.

If you’ve got a large gathering, you won’t want a tall vase of flowers, beautiful as it may be, to interfere with your guests’ conversation. It can be awkward to crane your neck around that vase to speak with someone across the table.

It makes better sense, with a large group, to have several small votive style candles or luminaria down the length of the table, with small vases or glasses of small dried flowers, each tied with a colored ribbon bow. A table runner underneath, running the length of the table attractively unifies and completes the centerpiece.

Another large group idea for a table centerpiece uses a couple of large ornate candlesticks with a thin profile placed towards the ends of the table. Shallow baskets filled with silk flowers are set spaced towards the center of the table. This is a good way to have a more formal look without interfering with conversations.

Want the table to look more glamorous? Go in for garlands, icicles and strings of beads! These are decorations used on Christmas trees. If they are interwoven amongst the candles and flowers, they give a very glitzy look to the table! If you do not want such decorations, use small figurines instead. But what has to be kept in mind is that the table is not overcrowded with decorations–just a few of each should do. The idea is to provide visual appeal, not clutter the table with as many items as you can find!

A long, shallow basket filled with brightly colored fall gourds and “Indian” corn makes a simple yet beautiful table centerpiece. Fresh fruit in a couple of baskets and within reach of all your guests is both attractive and edible.

So you can see there’s a world of ideas for table centerpieces. Some people set aside space in a cupboard or sewing room to store all their “props” to choose on a moment’s notice, ready to put some pizazz on your table.
