Will we be forced to have a children’s trust?
Most areas should have a children’s trust by 2006. The Government expects all areas to have a children’s trust by 2008. By 2008, local authorities are required to have in place arrangements that produce integrated working at all levels, from planning through to delivery, with a focus on improving outcomes. Local authorities may choose not to call this a ‘children’s trust’, but the important point is that the way of working is in place and committed to.

How do children qualify?
Application Specialists will help families complete the application form. The family will provide proof of income and county residency. Annual requalification will be required to maintain coverage.

What led to the development of children’s trusts?
Children’s trusts are a response to Lord Laming’s report of the inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbi, which highlighted the extent to which better working together and better communication are crucial. The evidence from the inquiry confirmed many of the messages from previous inquiries into similar child protection failings: the imperative to see and listen to children and respond to their needs, and to improve the quality of communication and joint working.

Who are the Psychic Children?
Also known as the Children of Oz, these children have been brought to our attention by James Twyman. James has several websites and an excellent book Emissary of Love in which he describes his journey with these children whom he met in Bulgaria. At this time, my information is limited to having read his book and making a psychic connection with them. I am also aware that I, and many others, have been working with the Children of Oz creating a new consciousness grid.

Who are the Indigo Children?
They are known as the “systems busters,” and as such will be one of the main reasons that antiquated systems on the earth are beginning to be dismantled, to change. These children are presently affecting the way we parent and the way we educate. As more of them reach adulthood, they will foster new paradigms in business, government, religion, etc. The Indigo Children will not participate in the”isms” such as racism, sexism, etc. They are known as the “systems busters,” and as such will be one of the main reasons that antiquated systems on the earth are beginning to be dismantled, to change. Why Test Our Children?
This is a very difficult question, and must therefore have a much more personal answer. For many of us, the over-riding reason to test our children is that the results can make a difference. Perhaps the difference is admission to a specific school, or admission to a school’s gifted pull-out program or gifted class. Perhaps its just a matter of proving to the teachers and administration that our child is different, and needs something different in their education.Children’s Care Gateway is a portal to real time clinical information for patients seen at Children’s Hospital.

Breath Control for Singers

by Elizabeth Schohl

Imagine becoming out of breath right in the middle of a particularly important stanza of your favorite song! That doesn’t sound so good does it? In fact that could be every singer’s problem, so let’s do something about learning how to breathe properly.

Every singer must learn to breath correctly as it is a part of basic singing skills, without question. You cannot handle your singing properly if you do not learn to use breath support while you sing. When you use breathing exercises regularly, you will be able to notice that you will be able to hold your breath longer and your voice projection will be much stronger.

Good voice modulation is experienced through abdominal breathing which is also considered therapeutic and relaxing. The singer must notice that when he breathes the breath comes not from his chest but from his abdomen. He should notice that instead of the expansion of the rib cage as he exhales or inhales, the stomach expands which indicates a flexing of the diaphragm.

If you practice good breath support you should be able to breathe deeply, which is important in singing. You need to be fully calm and hold no tension in your body while you attempt the breathing exercises. Don’t wear tight-fitting clothing such as belts, skirts, ties, slacks, jeans as these will restrict circulation and air flow from the lungs.

When you start to sing do not clench your jaw, tighten your fists, and the leg muscles tense. Keep the body upright and relaxed so you do not feel tense. You want to feel at ease with yourself, but prepared with good posture so that you can sing on cue!

When you have you hand on the chest and stomach, you will be able to observe the enlargement of them. You can use some breath support with your breathing in and out and note where the body is enlarging. When and if the rib cage is expanding, think about breathing from the stomach.

When you exhale, note that it is more essential than inhaling so that you must breath out gradually or little by little. Add some panting exercises to the mix, as it is a type of breathing exercise. The diaphragm will respond effectively when you take several intense panting breaths very rapidly.

When you practice deep breathing methods, it should happen naturally. What happens is that when there is good breath exhalation during a song the singer should be free of tension. Remember that breath control will start to become easier as time goes on, so keep on practicing so that it will become routine.

USA Opera Companies: Making Opera Fun And Approachable

by Jim Hofman

Opera music and performances have a long, storied history worldwide. With dramatic story lines and entrancing vocals, opera has been delighting audiences for over 400 years.

And yet, much like any other musical genre, opera has experienced its ebbs and flows. Despite maintaining an historical popularity, today’s opera companies have battled certain perception problems which have threatened this musical style’s viability with current music affecionados.

Opera in the United States

Opera has been performed in the United States since the late 1800’s, with its American roots traced to the New York Metropolitan Opera. Long popular with Italian immigrants in particular, the style soon reached across the country, with opera companies established in most major cities.

Today, there are over 140 opera companies in the United States. There are challenges appealing to today’s audiences, particularly overcoming the viewpoint that opera only appeals to the elite. Fortunately, many of these companies have developed an inclusive educational approach, and the results are very promising.

One of the historical challenges is that most operas are sung in Italian, which some audiences find as an impediment and off putting, particularly if they have no knowledge of the language. Further, traditional dress codes for opera performances can leave the modern generation feeling excluded. To combat these perceptions, many American opera companies have tackled the challenges head on with a unique sequence of strategies designed to attract new audiences.

Making Opera Approachable

Many opera companies seek to underscore the fascinating story lines of great, traditional operas like La Boheme, La Traviata, and others. Much like a classic movie that can be enjoyed again and again, these operas present timeless stories that are easily identified with all ages. A simple solution to the language issue is English subtitles, now fairly common during performances.

Further, many companies offer a pre performance lecture, which introduces audiences to various characters and introduces them to musical nuances. These lectures are proving very successful, as audiences seem less intimidated and willingly wrap themselves in the story. Also, the issue of dress code is being met head on, with one opera company encouraging casual dress if desired. In an effort to include anyone who may be interested in attending a performance, they state, “We love you no matter what you’re wearing”.

Attracting The Next Generation

Most importantly, opera companies are aggressively reaching out to young, talented singers. Many offer a Young Artists Program, designed to develop the talents needed to perform. These highly sought after programs include training on stage presence, diction, and voice development. Intensive individual coaching also plays a part, with the end result being a starring or supportive role in opera performances.

Many vibrant, attractive budding opera stars have burst onto the scene after completing these programs. These talented young singers attract not only a new generation, but traditionalists as well.

All of these efforts bode well for the future of opera. This traditional musical style is very fortunate to have supportive influencers who recognize the need to embrace and appeal to a new era of music lovers.

Opera Gloves: History and Fashion

by Jim Hofman

Whether you’re a fan of opera or not, the genre itself is often credited with bringing a sense of style and elegance to musical performance. Nowhere is this more evident than the use of opera gloves, a revered fashion accessory for women dating back over 300 years.

If you’ve ever watched an Audrey Hepburn movie, you understand the allure of opera gloves. They provide a demure sense of sophistication and class, a perfect finishing touch for elegant evening wear.

The Particulars

As we know them today, opera gloves are typically about 20 inches in length, designed to reach just below the elbow. Popular since the time of Napoleon, they are most commonly seen at opera or symphony performances. Typically made of special goat skin leather, they are exceptionally soft to the touch.

Just as with most fashion accessories, these gloves have evolved through the years. Some styles reach well above the elbow, while others are slightly shorter than elbow length. Usually white in color, they are often decorated with jeweled fasteners and gold trim. Almost always, they are adorned with decorative stitching across the back of the hand.

Availability and Uses

Opera gloves are available from boutique specialty stores in a wide array of styles and prices. Typically, the average pair runs in excess of $100 or more.

Every few years, these fashionable gloves make a rousing comeback, usually triggered by a memorable performance of one sort or another. In the 1950’s, several glamorous actresses stirred women’s interest in buying a pair, most notably Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. They are also used in retro performance pieces like the stage show and movie “Chicago”, or at costume parties depicting an earlier era.

Most often though, opera gloves are seen, and used, where they began - at the opera. And with a recent surge of popularity for opera performances, it’s likely we’ll see this classic fashion accessory reinvent itself over and over again.

Become a Singer and Performer

by Elizabeth Schohl

How can you get yourself ready for a show as a singer or entertainer so that you can ensure you will have a good performance? Get yourself mentally and physically ready so that you will focus with confidence on a delivering a great performance. Rehearse your songs and their lyrics so that you have them memorized.

If you feel like you need a cheat sheet on stage then do that, it’s important to know your material. Singing is like giving a speech from memory, know what you want to sing and keep that song playing in your mind. You’ll also need to drink plenty of water so that your vocal cords are hydrated, you don’t want to get dry mouth while singing and keeping your throat moist will help with your confidence.

Learn to listen to yourself singing through recording yourself, decide what you need to to do to build your performance skills. If you have a recording of a band or orchestra in the background, try to practice so that you sound naturally comfortable with the background music. Pinpoint parts in the music that don’t sound right or natural, and keep practicing until you get it right.

All great singers have something that makes them stand out, such as hand movements or stage presence or their ability to draw the crowd into their song. You’ll have to find something that creates an allure to your voice. If you have a certain appearance that you’re going for make sure it works for the crowd even when the lights are up.

Before going on stage, try to refrain from overusing your voice and don’t shout at all! Vocal cords are sensitive to overuse and abuse, and you certainly don’t want to add to the problem before an important performance. You can be a very good singer and maybe get away with a lot, but your voice is still sensitive to overuse.

Don’t dare eat any spicy food or soda pop, as the last thing you need is a noisy burp or a backup of food in your throat! Please don’t drink any form of alcohol, as it is bad for the vocal cords by dehydrating it. Instead, have some tea mixed with honey and lemon so that you soothe your vocal cords.

There are so many fine singers that constantly criticize and scrutinize themselves. Even if they receive very positive reviews after a performance, some gifted and popular singers still over analyze and dissect every performance. Some singers are very strict with guarding the quality of their voice so that they avoid problems associated with harming their vocal cords.

If you want to get some positive results from your singing then start in a small setting where the audience is captive. You could sing at a karaoke bar or offer to sing at a friend’s party where you get real feedback from people who might not know you but respect your craft, or you can also sing in church, which will help people to know that you have a good voice. If you read some of the biographies of singers they usually started out singing in a non-judgmental setting such as school plays, churches or Community Theater.

Opera Music: History, Evolution, and Rebirth

by Jim Hofman

If you’ve ever attended an opera, chances are you were enchanted by the timeless allure and sense of sophistication of this beautiful style of music and performance. It is truly amazing to reflect on the fact that this enduring genre has been going strong for over 400 years, and even enjoying a resurgence in popularity in the United States and abroad.

Opera’s roots are firmly European. The very first opera house, actually a theater designed to host opera performances, was built in Venice, Italy in the 1630’s. Composers of the day were mingling dramatic stories with music that ebbed and flowed. Audiences clamored to experience this blend of music and literary art on stage, and thus opera was born.

In those years, singing and dancing were commonplace at most public gatherings. Due to the size of crowds, strong powerful voices were recruited to perform certain singing parts, both male and female. In time, singers were specifically trained for operatic performances, a practice that continues to this day.

As the 17th century dawned, the popularity of opera spread to other European countries, like France, Germany, and England. Indeed, some of opera’s most famous works come from composers not native to Italy, like Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Georges Bizet.

The Passion Blooms In The United States

As a land of immigrants, it is only natural that those coming to the United States brought along their skills and passions. Certainly this is clearly most evident in New York, where the Metropolitan Opera House opened in 1883. Opera spread to other cities across the country, and audiences filled theaters nationally. Later, well known opera master like Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, and Giuseppe Di Stefano displayed their unique talents to a vast and appreciative American audience.

The Present Day

Opera continues to attract and enchant, witnessed by the fact that 135 opera companies operate in the United States today. Recently, there has been a surge in opera’s popularity, as these innovative companies reach out to those unfamiliar with this musical style. An inclusive educational approach has taken hold and broken down some perceptions that opera is only for the elite. Casual informative lectures, subtitles, and relaxed dress codes are just a few strategies opera companies use to attract attendees.

Most importantly, many of these same companies have developed training programs for young singers. Many of these young artists are now performing and thriving in venues across the country. It is hoped this continuing education approach will keep opera thriving and vibrant for generations to come.

Bartending 101: Five Steps To Double Your Tips

by Jim Hofman

If you’re a bartender, even the most successful of bartenders, it’s likely you’re seeing a few less customers give today’s economic climate. If this unfortunate reality is eroding your tips, it’s time to take charge.

Here are five tried and true steps to double your tips:

Double Your Tips Strategy #1: Attract A Bit Of Attention

If your establishment gives you a bit of wardrobe latitude, glam it up a bit. Here’s an example … just for fun, a young man and young woman were working the same bar shift and were planning to attend a mutual friend’s wedding the next day. For their shift, he wore a stylish tux and she complemented the look with a short black cocktail dress. It drew attention to the bar, they sold more drinks, and cashed in on the tips!

Double Your Tips Strategy #2: Hold An Impromptu Contest

Here’s a great one that’s very topical. A bartender at a local establishment gathered the crowd around the bar and gave them all a piece of paper and pencil. Each customer was given a time limit of three minutes to name as many U.S. Presidents as they could. The winner got a free drink. Further, the contest had the desired effect, as people got talking to one another, more drinks were sold, and more tips were given. By the way, some brainiac at the bar was able to name every single president, in order!

Double Your Tips Strategy #3: Create A Special Birthday Drink

This is a great strategy for your regulars. Be creative and come up with a special drink, or shot, just for them. They’ll undoubtedly appreciate your thoughtfulness and will almost always feel obliged to leave you a great tip.

Double Your Tips Strategy #4: Work With The DJ Part One

If you work at an establishment with the DJ, remember they are always the center of attention. Getting a little help from them can help your tips skyrocket. Have the DJ announce your drink specials and mention you by name, with you of course smiling and waving to the crowd. It’s a sure fire strategy to get people to order drinks specifically from you.

Double Your Tips Strategy #5: Work With The DJ Part Two

You can work with the DJ in a few other ways. Ask him to announce your name and even ask people to tip you. Sounds blunt, but it works! Also, have the DJ ask if anyone is celebrating a birthday. After verification, the DJ sends the celebrant over to the bar, where you have a free shot waiting for them. Usually, the birthday guy or gal is with a bunch of friends, all of whom will descend upon the bar as well. This translates to more drinks being sold, and more tips!

Summary

Remember, if you’re a bartender, you’re a salesperson and entertainer all wrapped into one. Use a bit of creativity to get people to the bar, and then turn on the charisma. Your tips will skyrocket!

Audio Books: Large Online Libraries Mean Great Selection

by Brad Morgan

If you have not already experienced audio books online, do some research or order a book right away. There are so many benefits of this technology.

If you have heard your favorite authors in the form of an audio book, you already have an idea of the advantages offered by a vast audio books online library and bookstore.

Newcomers to the technology, though, are in for a treat: here are just some of the benefits of browsing an audio books online library:

Advantage #1 - Access

Is downloading an audio book online an arduous process?

It’s actually quite simple, and with audio books, you get access to the written word in a way that you could never get through the use of conventional libraries.

Traditional libraries force you to drive or walk to the library and then check out an often limited number of books which you then have to cart home afterwards. The access is diminished, as is the convenience that comes with audio book downloads.

To order audio books online, all you really need is a computer and a way to purchase the audio book.

Once you’ve placed your order, you can easily access the download file and listen to it in a variety of ways. You may opt to transfer it to a CD or mp3 file and listen to it in the car, or you may just choose to leave the audiobook on your computer and listen to it from there.

You have several choices when it comes to listening to audio books, and the convenience that comes with listening at your leisure or even when you’re on the go is often understated.

It is nice occasionally to curl up with a good book, which is why most books are printed and distributed in a traditional way. But audio books provide you with more options and freedom of use; try one, and you’ll soon want to curl up with your MP3 player for a good book.

Audio Books Advantage #2 ? Lower Price

Maybe you are not interested in borrowing books or downloading the free ones, but are actually interested in a purchase.

Book publishers and stores need to charge so much for books because they need to recoup the money they spend on the contents, the paper, the ink, the graphics, the jacket design, and all the artists whose work goes into each book.

With audio books online, however, you just pay for the content. There is also a small fee that online providers charge for storing the audio files on their online servers. The result is a much lower cost, and this has made audio books a viable option for so many people.

Price is definitely a factor in most people’s decision to listen to audio books online, and you can save a significant amount of money by opting for an audio book download.

While there are several advantages to enjoying literature in an audio format, easy access and price are perhaps the two largest factors influencing a buyer’s decision.

When you order audio books online, you’ll have great written works with just the click of a button and for much less than what you would pay for a traditional book at a bookstore.
